Marisa Liz Wears a Luis Carvalho Dress Crafted from Traditional Palestinian Keffiyehs

A powerful intersection of fashion, culture, and social consciousness at The Voice Gerações Portugal 2025.

On Sunday evening, during the finale of The Voice Gerações Portugal 2025, singer Marisa Liz appeared on stage in a striking custom gown by Portuguese designer Luis Carvalho.

The dress, created entirely from traditional Palestinian keffiyehs, stood as both an artistic statement and a gesture of solidarity amidst the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Palestine.

“The art we create has always been a reflection of the times we live in and the emotions we carry. If we can use our art to draw attention to issues that must be changed, we will continue to do so, as we have before, and as we will in the future.”

shared Marisa Liz.

For Carvalho, the design was born from a desire to transform a cultural symbol into a piece of high fashion.

“The keffiyeh was the starting point and inspiration for this creation. I wanted to bring it into a new, unexpected context, to turn it into a gown made for a special moment, on a stage with such visibility. It is an honor to realize this project with Marisa, to give voice to a cause that calls for empathy.”

The dress was crafted using keffiyehs produced by The Golden Textile Factory Co. in Amman, Jordan.

The iconic black-and-white pattern, often described as the unofficial Palestinian flag, carries a deep cultural and political significance.

Historically worn by Bedouins as protection from the desert sun and sand, its checked motif has been interpreted as fishing nets, olive trees, honeycombs, or even hands joined together, a metaphor for resilience and unity.

For Liz, the gown represents more than fashion; it is a call to reflection.

“Palestine, to me, is the most shocking symbol of what is happening to our humanity. Even though it is in front of everyone’s eyes, a genocide continues. We face countless issues around the world, even here in Portugal. But Palestine is a reminder that things have reached an extreme point of cruelty, forcing us to ask ourselves: which path do we want to take as human beings?”

Following the gala, the dress will continue its journey beyond the stage.

It may be donated, auctioned, or exhibited, with the purpose of transforming this symbolic act into tangible support for humanitarian causes connected to Palestine.

Marisa Liz and Luis Carvalho have long collaborated on projects that fuse fashion with social messages, yet this creation stands out as one of their most poignant, shaped by the urgency of the present moment.
