Getting the Stamina to Thrive as Someone Who Wants to Be More Than a Parent!

As we all know, parenthood comes with a unique set of demands from the personal to the professional and purposeful, which can also mean that we feel like we need to put our passions, career, or even our well-being on the back burner.

Thriving as a parent who is also pursuing our dreams takes stamina that we can’t get from just caffeine.

What does it take to build the energy and resilience you need to succeed in all the roles that matter to you?

Prioritise Your Health First

It’s all about self-awareness, but of course, we’re not all doctors, so you should think about scheduling a private health check to give you a clear picture of your current physical wellness.

It can also uncover silent health issues and set a baseline for your improvement, and your blood pressure, nutrient levels, and overall fitness will help you to set realistic goals and avoid burnout before it has a chance to begin.

Being proactive like this is empowering, but it also gives you a new starting point in how to take ownership of your vitality.

Nourish Your Body

You bang the drum about why your children should eat healthily, but do you take that advice yourself?

Meal prep for you and include the things that will fuel your energy and focus.

There’s a lot more discussion about the right types of supplements now, and even any woman over the age of 40 is now being told to consume creatine, because it’s not just amazing for your physical health but can do a lot for your brain as well.

So if you feel like you’re constantly fuzzy in your focus, go back to those things that you know you should consume.

Lean protein, colourful vegetables, slow-burning carbs, and yes, even healthy fats like olive oil will make all the difference.

And let’s not forget, even a slight dip in your hydration levels will affect your focus, so keep water nearby!

Design Your Day With Recovery in Mind

It’s not just about waiting until the end of the day to rest and recharge.

Look at how people who exercise structure a workout and think about how you can apply this to your day, because if you’re tired by 11:00 a.m., what can you do to recharge yourself?

A couple of minutes of stretching or a quick walk can make a big impact.

Also, think about the way you work, either as a parent or as an employee.

Sometimes five minutes of planning, in other words, setting the intention, then five minutes of preparing, such as clearing your workspace, then five minutes of priming, such as getting your nervous system ready to focus through deep breathing, and then 30 minutes of proper work can be fantastic for your productivity (also known as the 5-5-5-30 rule)!

Finally, don’t feel guilty.

Being a parent is a central role, but it’s not the entirety of who you are.

Pursuing goals in life beyond your parental ones requires stamina, and if you feel like you’re running out of steam constantly, go back to what you can do to fuel yourself, even if it’s something as simple yet incredibly effective as visualisation and positive self-talk.

Five minutes of this as soon as you wake up and five minutes before you go to sleep could be all you need to retrain that brain of yours.
