Unforgettable Family Getaway

After Santorini, we headed to Naxos!

During our research, we looked for a Greek island ideal for families and young children, and Naxos came up as one of the top choices. After reading a lot about it, we decided to take the advice and go for it!

As soon as we arrived, after a quick boat trip, we realized that the island was completely different from Santorini and ideally suited us!

It is a very large island, and we chose a place to stay away from the city and close to the best beaches!

The Irida Vacation Suits was such a great choice!

We were warmly welcomed upon arrival and immediately advised on the best beaches and places to eat. We followed all the recommendations and did not regret it!

We stayed in a double bed apartment with all the hotel amenities, including a kitchenette, which was very handy for preparing quick meals to take to the beach with the kids.

Most beaches are almost deserted, so having snacks ready in our cooler bags whenever we needed them was perfect.

The atmosphere at Irida Vacation Suits was very family-friendly, with many young and relaxed couples like us. The apartment had an outdoor area where the kids played a lot, allowing them to explore the common areas freely.

The breakfasts were excellent, and we enjoyed great family meals outdoors. While we ate peacefully, the kids could swim in the pool without us losing sight of them.

Every day, the rooms were cleaned and kept immaculate.

We felt right at home! We recommend this place to all couples with or without children!

Discovering the Best Beaches of Naxos

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.

Exploring the Tranquility of Kastraki Beach

Located on the island's southwestern coast, Kastraki offers an escape from the more crowded tourist spots, providing a peaceful haven where you can unwind and reconnect with nature. The beach has a long stretch of fine, golden sand and crystal-clear waters that gently lap the shore. The shallow waters make it an ideal spot for our children to play and swim safely, while the soft sand was perfect for building sandcastles and enjoying beach games. The beach is enhanced by the surrounding dunes and sparse vegetation, creating a pristine and untouched atmosphere. Kastraki Beach is also home to charming tavernas where you can savour the delicious local cuisine.

Exploring the Tranquility of Kastraki Beach

Pirgaki Beach, located on the southwestern coast of Naxos, is renowned for its serene beauty and pristine waters. But beyond its tranquil shores lies an adventure waiting to be discovered: rock jumping. Yes, we are a crazy family, and we decided to go there as soon as we heard about this. I had already done a similar experience in Portugal, so I didn't think twice! I carried the youngest one with my toddler sling from wildride, and the older kids calmly followed their dad. As soon as I saw that crystal blue water, I couldn't resist, and off we went! We started at the lowest level and gradually increased to almost the highest at 5-6 meters! The kids loved watching us jump, and the oldest didn't hesitate to jump from the lowest level, too! We loved starting the day with an adrenaline rush! It's always essential to take precautions. Before jumping, check the water depth and for any submerged rocks. Wearing water shoes for a better grip and to protect your feet is also advisable.

Tanquil Serenity: Discovering Aliko Beach

The day was windier, so we looked for a more sheltered beach! Before reaching the beach (which is more hidden than usual), we enjoyed delicious food at a Fusion Street Food truck, usually by the roadside. The kids loved the experience; there was background music, and the food was delicious! There's nothing near the beach, so bringing packed meals is advisable! The beach had very few people and was delightful! There were many trees behind the sand where the kids built cabins among them and spent the day playing with little beach beetles! It was their favourite beach, and they keep asking to go back! Aliko Beach is less developed than some of the more popular beaches on Naxos, adding to its charm and appeal for those seeking a quieter and more relaxed beach experience.

Serene Bliss: Discovering Agios Prokopios Beach

I'm a snorkelling enthusiast and couldn't leave the island without exploring the sea further! Agios Prokopios Beach is one of the island's most famous and beloved beaches. We stayed at one end of the beach where there are more rocks to explore, but the beach has a vast stretch of sand with plenty of sunbeds, umbrellas, and various beach facilities, making it popular among tourists and locals. And, of course, the water is gorgeous! There are some excellent restaurants here, and we had delicious food at the one we chose (I don't remember the name), but all in this area are good and have a magnificent view of the beach). Visitors can enjoy various water sports, such as windsurfing, kiteboarding, and paddleboarding, thanks to the favourable wind conditions in the area. The kids had a great time playing on the rocks, but because it was a bit too windy and the beach was very spacious, we decided to spend the rest of the day at our favourite beach, Aliko Beach! And here, once again, they were very happy in their treehouses and roamed naked as they liked!

Panermos Beach: Serenity Found on Naxos' Northern Coast

Panermos Beach is known for its secluded and unspoiled setting. Tucked away from the more touristy areas, it provides a peaceful escape for those looking to unwind and enjoy the natural surroundings. It had a little taverna where a lovely family welcomed us. They had everything for the kids to play with and take to the beach. They loved it!

Immersing in Naxos: A Cultural Journey Through History and Heritage

The Gateway to History: Exploring Naxos' Temple of Apollo

Once in Naxos, we couldn't miss visiting the Temple of Apollo! It's near Chora, where we also took the opportunity to explore and shop for souvenirs to remember later! The path to Portara is easy, surrounded by sea and great views! The kids enjoyed learning about the history behind it and learning more about the Greek gods! Its Doric-style temple, built from local marble, is a dedication to Apollo, the Greek god of music, poetry, prophecy, and archery. In ancient times, such temples served as centres of religious worship and often hosted ceremonies, festivals, and rituals dedicated to the deity. Its picturesque location and historical significance make it a must-visit site for those interested in archaeology and ancient civilizations.

Chalkio Villa: Tranquil Charms of Rural Naxos

On our way back from Panermos Beach, this village caught our attention for its beauty, so we decided to stop for ice cream! It's super picturesque, with pedestrian-friendly streets where we could stroll and enjoy delicious artisanal ice cream! The village is a vibrant hub of local culture and craftsmanship. Deeply rooted in tradition, Chalkio Villa's artisans produce authentic pottery, textiles, and other handmade goods. We did some shopping and took a lot of beautiful photos! As we left, we regretted not staying for dinner at one of the charming village tavernas. The thought of the delicious local cuisine still lingers, making us wish for a return visit!

Northeast side of Naxos

To bid farewell and explore the island further, we decided to take the car and embark on a road trip to the northeast side of Naxos towards Panermos Beach. It was a scenic journey of about 2 hours that went beautifully! Along the way, we passed through beautiful, picturesque villages away from the sea and enjoyed breathtaking mountain views. It was excellent for getting to know the island's more natural side. We climbed the mountain and descended until we began to see the sea again. On our way to our final destination, we found dozens of enticing deserted beaches.

Discovering Culinary Delights: Restaurant Tips for Naxos

The open-air seating provides a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. Children were welcomed with open arms, and there was something on the menu for everyone, ensuring a delightful dining experience for all!

  • Vigla’s Grill, Katraki

A calm restaurant with a spacious terrace and plenty of surrounding space for kids to run around freely.

They mainly serve simple grilled dishes and pizzas. A good option for a quick lunch at lower prices!

We liked the restaurant a lot and ended up going more than once for dinner. It is very spacious, with good barbecue food and typical Naxian dishes served in large portions!

There was an outdoor area for the kids to explore freely, and inside, there was a little corner with toys for the children.

Naxos proves to be an ideal destination for families traveling with kids, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and family-friendly places!

From the stunning, tranquil beaches like Aliko and Agios Prokopios to the charming villages of Chalkio and Katraki, there is no shortage of places to explore and enjoy.

Whether building sandcastles on the beach, hiking through scenic landscapes, or indulging in local delicacies, Naxos offers countless opportunities for family bonding and adventure.

This enchanting island leaves us with cherished memories and a longing to return soon!!!

From Dreams to Reality: Our First Family Trip to Santorini with Kids!

When our youngest reached three, we finally decided to take our first family trip by plane!
Choosing the destination wasn’t immediately unanimous because we received a lot of tips and did a lot of research, and everything pointed us towards a first experience at an all-inclusive beach resort.
However, we wanted something else! I had always dreamed of visiting the Greek islands, especially Santorini.
So, we decided to take the risk despite everyone telling us it would be a tiring trip and that moving around would be challenging!
The first week of June was perfect. We loved the heat but wanted something other than the peak tourist season! And so it was: the weather was perfect, and the hotels, beaches, and towns were relatively quiet.

Flights

Since it was the first time the kids would fly, we chose a direct flight to Santorini in edreams.
We opted for a night flight, which we realized was not the best choice because they couldn’t sleep well on the plane, and it was challenging to handle their crankiness due to the lack of sleep.
But as soon as we arrived at the hotel, their sleepiness vanished, and they immediately wanted to play in the room’s pool!

Car Rental

When we planned the trip, we were worried it wouldn’t be easy to drive and park, but it was our best decision.
We didn’t encounter any issues and were able to reach some places that we wouldn’t have been able to or would have taken twice as long without our own car.
It was essential for the kids because they could take short naps whenever they got into the car!
Centauro.net had good options and we choose a small car that was perfect for parking anywhere.

We are not the type to plan too much; we prefer to go without any fixed plans and decide what to do each day based on the kids’ mood and ours!

The only thing we decided in advance was the choice of hotel. After some research, we chose Nous Santorini, and we couldn’t be happier and more satisfied with our choice!

The location, relatively close to the airport yet far enough from the city chaos, is perfect!

We stayed in a family villa with a private pool and two spacious bedrooms, accommodating us and delighting the little ones.

They felt at home with king-size beds to jump on as much as they wanted, Netflix to watch cartoons when they woke up, a shower for all three to bathe together, and a private pool where they could relax and play a lot without disturbing anyone.

In addition to our spacious and comfortable villa, the entire hotel is stunning!

Besides the main pool that invites you for a good swim, there’s a small heated pool that the kids love. We spent the holidays hearing, “Mom, let’s go to the hotel jacuzzi!”

The breakfasts are delicious, with many healthy options and more indulgent ones that are great for the little ones.

The spa offers a wide range of massages and treatments, and it was our refuge when we needed to relax after a lot of walking during the day!

I have always been connected to events, and I had the privilege of exploring their interior big room connected to a terrace with a sea view, perfect for hosting all kinds of ceremonies.

I already know where I’m going to celebrate my golden wedding anniversary!!!

Exploring Santorini's Best Beaches: A Guide to Sun, Sand, and Sea

Vlichada Beach, Unique Landscape

Vlichada Beach is renowned for its striking scenery. The beach is framed by towering white cliffs sculpted by the wind and sea, giving them an otherworldly, almost lunar appearance. These natural formations create a dramatic backdrop against the dark volcanic sand and pebbles of the beach, offering a stark contrast that is both beautiful and mesmerizing. It is less crowded than other beaches on the island, making it an ideal spot for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy peace. The beach's spaciousness means plenty of room to spread out and find your little piece of paradise. Don't forget to bring Essentials: while there is a bar, it's a good idea to bring your water, snacks, and beach gear.

Perivolos Beach: Striking Volcanic Beauty

Perivolos Beach is renowned for its long stretch of black volcanic sand, a hallmark of Santorini's beaches. The deep blue waters of the Aegean Sea create a striking contrast against the dark sand, making it a picturesque spot for sunbathing and swimming. This very large beach is perfect for walking along the shoreline because, despite having pebbles, it also has plenty of fine, comfortable sand. What sets Perivolos Beach apart is its lively and energetic atmosphere. The beach offers a unique vibe with many bars that host live DJ sets and events, creating a festive atmosphere that often continues well into the evening. The kids loved being on the beach with the music playing, and we, the parents, could only imagine staying there all night dancing by the sea! For the adventurous, Perivolos Beach offers a wide range of water sports and activities. You can rent jet skis, go windsurfing, try paddleboarding, or take a thrilling ride on a banana boat. With a three-year-old kid, we opt for a Pacific option! Ample parking is available near the beach.

Red Beach: Natural Beauty

Red Beach gets its name from the towering red cliffs surrounding it, which are composed of volcanic rock and ash. The contrast between the deep red cliffs, the dark volcanic sand, and the turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea creates a breathtaking and surreal scene. The beach is relatively small but incredibly picturesque, offering stunning views and photo opportunities. Access to Red Beach involves a short walk down a steep path from the parking area, which adds to its secluded and natural appeal. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for the hike. With three young children, the descent seemed challenging, so we decided to stay and enjoy the view from up here! We then headed to Kamini Beach, where we could more easily access Red Beach!

Kaminia Beach

Kaminia Beach is known for its peaceful and secluded atmosphere. Unlike the more crowded beaches in Santorini, Kaminia remains relatively undiscovered, making it ideal for those seeking a quieter beach experience. Cliffs and natural rock formations surround the beach, adding charm and privacy. Access to Kaminia Beach requires a long car ride on a small road that is not very easy to drive and a short walk down a path from the parking area, ensuring its peaceful ambience. In the end, there's a small café for refreshments and snacks.

Caldera Beach: A Tranquil Oasis

Caldera Beach, nestled within the iconic Santorini Caldera, offers a unique and serene beach experience against towering cliffs and stunning volcanic scenery. Caldera Beach offers a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere, unlike some of the more bustling beaches in Santorini. It's an ideal spot for those seeking tranquillity and a quieter beach experience away from the crowds. The calm waters and gentle waves make it perfect for swimming and lounging under the Mediterranean sun. There is a diving school and snorkelling equipment rental available. With young children, I grabbed the snorkelling kits and swam in the beach's warm waters. The kids loved exploring the surrounding nature, and the shaded areas provided by the beach were perfect for the little one's naps.

A Journey Through Its Cultural and Historical Sites

We chose to visit more beaches and enjoy long hours of swimming and relaxation rather than visiting the villages extensively.

Nonetheless, we were told immediately that we had to visit Pyrgos, and we didn’t regret it!

Pyrgos, A Charming Santorini Village

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.

Fira: The Vibrant Heart of Santorini.

Fira offers some of the most breathtaking views in Santorini, with panoramic vistas of the Caldera, volcanic islands, and the sparkling blue sea below. The town's cliffside location provides numerous vantage points for capturing stunning photos, especially during sunrise and sunset. We can park the car in a few parking lots, and the rest is done on foot! This was the first place where we felt some stress! There were many people on the streets and some confusion, but we had to explore and take the opportunity to shop and bring home souvenirs! There are a lot of local handicrafts and souvenirs to designer boutiques and jewellery shops. There are plenty of places to eat, but finding an ideal spot for dining with kids wasn't easy. We stopped at one place where we enjoyed a splendid view but had mediocre and unremarkable food. Nevertheless, the visit was worth it; seeing the city during the day and then at night is magical! We don't recommend staying overnight, but it's great for a day trip.

Oia, Santorini's Iconic Cliffside Village

Oia, perched on the northern tip of Santorini, Greece, is renowned for its breathtaking views, traditional Cycladic architecture, and romantic sunsets. Walking through Oia feels like stepping into a traditional Greek island postcard. The village has charming boutiques, art galleries, and souvenir shops offering handmade ceramics, jewellery, and local artwork. We stopped at Roka Restaurant, which is situated in an old building in an area where you can admire old preserved captain houses. The warm colours of the small courtyard filled with trees and flowers give you the feeling of a relaxing and pleasant welcome escaping from the crowd. Inside are three small charming rooms to sit in, ideal for some colder nights, near the wooden stove, where you can enjoy delicate flavours. We loved the food, and they especially made simple pasta for the kids; they loved it!

Cavo Tagoo

We wanted to see the acclaimed sunset recommended almost everywhere on the island. We stopped at a new fancy restaurant called Roka (hotel Cavo Tagoo), which had a great and trendy vibe. We only realized after sitting down that it was Japanese and not very child-friendly! The sunset was amazing and worth it, and the kids ended up enjoying the atmosphere and exploring the fish they had in aquariums at the bar!

Must-Have Packing Essentials for Your Santorini Adventure

  • Comfortable Shoes:

We talked several times about buying swimming shoes, but in the end, we didn’t.

Strap-on sandals and Crocs fro the kids work fine; we only need to take them off when we enter the sea.

We all have rigid feet, and we adapted to the beach pebbles by the end of the day!

  • Cool Swimwear:

We love to dress our kids in Molo’s playful designs, and for the beach, they’re perfect because we can spot them even far away!

They offers an array of swimwear that perfectly blends style, comfort, and practicality for kids.

  • Swing Carrier:

The youngest is three years old and often asks to be carried! A good toddler swing like my from Wildride was our salvation on many challenging paths!

  • Backpack:

When it comes to travel, especially with kids, a reliable backpack can make all the difference!

We choose one from Thule and we took it everywhere with all our kids essencials!

  • Cooler:

We brought one small cooler that our kids usually get to school from Grech&Co , and we knew it would come in handy. It did!

Every day, we stopped at a grocery store to stock up on essentials for the kids, and it often came in handy because not all beaches have restaurants nearby.

This way, we could stay longer at the beaches.

  • Sunscreen:

Our kids love the Sun Stick Color from Seventy-One. It’s portable, ultra-practical and 100% recyclable. Every day, they did a different painting on the face and had a lot of fun with it!

My favourite for all days is the Feel Golden SPF30, an anti-ageing and moisturizing hybrid tinted fluid treatment that isperfect for covering all my stains.

  • Toys:

A small backpack with books, colored pencils, and small, practical games like Plus Plus puzzles is essential for keeping the kids entertained in longer restaurants.

Our family trip to Santorini was a remarkable adventure that exceeded our expectations.

Despite initial concerns about traveling with young children, the beauty, culture, and charm of Santorini made every moment worthwhile!

From exploring stunning beaches and historical sites to enjoying delicious cuisine and breathtaking sunsets, we created unforgettable memories together.

Traveling with kids taught us that with a positive mindset, flexibility, and a spirit of adventure, even the most daunting trips can turn into the most cherished experiences.

Santorini welcomed us with open arms, and we left with hearts full of joy!

U.S. National Parks in one word…“Majestic!”

These are four people (currently five!) know as @bigbravenomad whose love for travelling together can be seen in the sheer number of places they have already visited!

What this family really loves is adventure, and we didn’t want to be left out.

Let’s get to know a little more of the USA with the Carlsons!

By Ana Roque

They live in Barbados and absolutely love to travel, but no, they are not the typical family you are expecting.

The Carlsons are a US military family who travel the world any time their leave gets approved.

Tavia, her husband, and the kids Charletta and Latham share the same love for adventure and live it together. “We love hiking, snorkelling and trying new foods!”

Tavia told Lemon that she has always had alove for travelling. “As a child, I did not do much travel with my family, but when I was 17 I signed up for one of my high school’s tours to France and visited Europe for the first time. It opened up my eyes to the world and in college I spent a month travelling Europe.” At that point, everything changed. “I knew I needed to see more of the world. After that, my husband (then boyfriend) and I travelled as much as we were able.”

By now, they have travelled to “25 countries, 48 US States and are avid US National Park lovers”. And it shows!

Of the 63 that exist in the U.S., this family have visited 50. That is exactly why we asked them to guide us through them.

TOP 3 U.S. NATIONAL PARKS YOU HAVE VISITED

Olympic National Park in Washington

This park truly has it all: ocean front hikes, trails through magical rainforests, hikes that traverse high mountain peaks, hot springs, stunning in-park accommodation, and fairy-tale alpine lakes. This park really checks the boxes for anyone dipping their toes into the National Parks because you can explore so many different climates and terrains in one single park.”

Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming

“This is one of the most gorgeous National Parks in the Continental United States. Here you will find drastic mountain peaks, hikes for any ability, boat rides across gorgeous lakes, unmatched in-park accommodation, and mountain views that look like they come out of a storybook. This park is best visited in July-September because heavy snow closes some of the park through the winter months.”

Yosemite National Park in California

This is a heavily trafficked National Park, but for good reason. This park has incredible views that you don’t need to hike to see. The park offers a variety of hiking trails from extreme to very easy and almost all of them have rewarding views. In the park you can swim in the streams, hike the mountains, ski in the winter, bike the valley, drive up to breath-taking lookout points, walk through Giant Sequoia groves, and their in-park accommodation is amazing. If you can, try to snag a room at the historic Ahwahnee.”

The best kid-friendly U.S. National Park

“Almost every single park has a nature trail or even an accessible trail, easy access lookout points, a Junior Ranger Programme, Ranger-led events, camping, and so much more that kids can do! I recommend giving them all a try!”

And the worst?

“In my experience, Guadalupe Mountains National Park is a difficult park to trek with little kids. The park itself is amazing and is home to the highest peak in Texas, but not if you’re looking for easy hiking with kids.

It does have a couple of nature trails and a museum, but it won’t take you long to explore it all if you’re not wanting to do strenuous hikes.”

TRAVELLING WITH KIDS – A GUIDE

What is the secret to making trips go smoothly with kids?

Patience is really the only thing you can control when travelling with children. We have been travelling with our two kids since they were a couple weeks old.Expect the unexpected and loosen your trip goals. Children are unpredictable and exciting, so let that spontaneity benefit you and not dishearten you. We build in a lot of down time for our kids and try to balance kid-friendly excursions with what my husband and I want to see.

What is an absolute must to entertain the young ones?

Piggy backing off the previous answer, I would say to try to find restaurants or outdoor spaces that have playgrounds. We have eaten at some of the most gorgeous and delicious restaurants that cater to families. It’s so nice to be able to eat with your spouse or family while the kids play.

What tips do you give to people who want to travel with the kids but are afraid?
Rip off the band-aid. Don’t let your fear stop you from experiencing all the world has to offer. There are 195 unique countries across the globe, 50 vastly different U.S. States, and endless places to experience. Children are sponges and the exposure to new food, new culture, new language, and new environments are a greater asset to their development than any classroom can provide.

“Must-haves for exploring the outdoors safely”, by Tavia Carlson

“Download ‘AllTrails’ and have the maps for the hikes you’re taking pre-downloaded on your phone in case you don’t have data service”

“Water bottles for every person in your group”

“Sun hats, sunglasses and sunscreen”

“Bug Spray”

“Good shoes that are appropriate for the terrain. Even the kids need good hiking shoes”

“Snacks”

“A rain jacket for each person”

“We also bring a GPS tracker on every single hike we take”

Travelling with children is challenging for most parents, but not for Katrien and Ludovic.

Taking their two kids by the hand, they have travelled (almost) the whole world.

We wanted to find out more about their trip to India and they told us everything we need to know to just go!

Katrien Goris and Ludovic Lenaerts have always loved to travel, travelling together since meeting in 2006.

Now with two kids, nothing has changed.

“For us, travelling is a way of life. We never really thought that having kids would be a reason not to go out and explore the world.”

By Ana Roque for Lemon Print Edition #5

ADVENTURE IN INDIA

The family went to India in April 2018. By that time, Elodie was almost three years old and Bas was seven.

They visited four cities – New Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Varanas – and stayed in the country for three weeks, but it was not enough.

“Afterwards, we felt like we would have loved some more time in Jaipur, for example.”

The starting point for them was the city of New Delhi

“We booked a hotel for a couple of days at Aerocity, which is quite close to the airport. We chose this option because we were told the atmosphere was a little more relaxed here than closer to the city.”

“It turned out to be a good choice, since the cultural differences were huge, especially for the kids.”

In fact, this was their favourite thing about the trip.

“We had the opportunity to start a conversation with the kids about the differences between their lives and the lives of the kids we met, but also had the opportunity to give them a relaxed time because the luxury hotels are very affordable.”

“Talking to your kids about these issues is one thing, but we have to keep in mind that they deserve a carefree youth. We can’t put all the misery in the world on their shoulders.”

To travel between the cities they chose to visit, Katrien and Ludovic decided to hire a private driver together with their rental car.

“The driver is at your disposal whenever you want and they stay in accommodation near yours. But you don’t have to worry about that because it’s included in the rental price.”

Of the four cities they went to, Jaipur was by far the most special

“The city is awesome in so many ways. The historical and architectural wealth is breath-taking and there are so many wonderful places to see. Ajmer Fort, the Hawa Mahal, the Jawahar Circle and the Monkey Temple…”

But there’s a lot more you mustn’t miss out on in India:

Agra, with the Taj Mahal and the Red Fort is a must-see. The Tiger Safari in Ranthambore in the North-West of the country is also something you just have to do.”

For the kids, this was one of the most special parts of the trip. But Katrien told us they also loved to stay on the boathouse in Kerala.

“I think it’s important to give them some time to be kids, to play and have fun inside the safe walls of the hotels. They see the bigger picture for sure, but we also have to give them time to absorb and process their experiences. Our kids really need that when we’re away.”

At the end of the day, Katrien thinks of India as a family-friendly destination, especially for those used to travelling around.

“It’s very hectic and the cultural gap is gigantic. If you’ve already experienced Asian destinations like Thailand, Vietnam or Cambodia and you enjoyed it, then it’s definitely worth the visit.”

It is also excellent for parents who think that awareness is important in their kid’s education. “Going to India was the best way to show our kids how people live and how things like religion, wealth and climate have a huge influence on how you grow up. The way we think and act depends on how we see the world and for that reason, we are beyond grateful we were able to travel India with our kids. Especially Bas, who still talks about it sometimes, asking questions and giving his opinion. Even almost three years after visiting the country. That for sure is one of the reasons we like to travel around the world. We hope that this way, our kids will develop an open-minded attitude towards people with different backgrounds.”

Of all the places they’ve been to, the only one she does not recommend to other families is the city of Varanasi.

“It is one of the oldest cities in the world and a sacred place. It’s mind blowing and the atmosphere gets to you while walking around between the cows on one side and being yelled at to get on a boat on the other. You also see a lot of kids begging for money. They chase you down the streets for minutes and seem to be trained in how to address tourists. We loved the experience but I’m not sure if I would recommend it to other families.”

Still about India, Katrien left us with a curious warning. “Kids with blond hair (like Elodie) are almost worshipped in parts of Asia, and in India too. We often had to put her on our shoulders to prevent people picking her up and cuddling her all the time. Although this was meant as a kind act towards her, she hated it.”

The Miljian are a unique family of five. From 2017 to 2020, travelling full-time was their lifestyle, but the pandemic changed all that and now they are living in Bali. We wanted to get to know them a little better and asked them to introduce us to the island. Let’s go!

Julien and Miki are a couple of entrepreneurs and travellers. Together they have three kids — Teo, six; Lia, four; and Milo, one. They are the Miljian, “a family who left it all behind three years ago to live the greatest adventure around the world.”

In this family, everyone has an important role. Miki tells all the family’s adventures while Julien photographs them. As for the kids, “Teo is a natural animal explorer, Lia is a unicorn fan and ballet dancer, and Milo is a smiley little boy.”Before becoming parents, travelling did not figure in this couple’s plans, at least full time. “We became free spirits during our first long trip in Vietnam when Miki was pregnant with our first son, Teo, in 2014. That changed us and left us with this crazy dream that one day we could be travelling all over the globe with our children.”

Flash forward to September 2017 and their so-called crazy dream came true. They left their family home in Florence, Italy, with two kids and a one-way ticket to the world. “Our home was two suitcases and two backpacks. We were moving every five days from one house to another.”

Their new lifestyle changed them as individuals and as a family. “Every day was a new daily routine that pushed all our family to be flexible, grateful and respectful to the locals, to raise our children with the values that the planet needs now more than ever. As we often say, we do not count how many visas we have in our passport but how many incredible experiences we share on our path. This is what we keep in our memories and what we want to remember when we are sitting on our sofa in ten years.”

Japan, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, South Korea and Vietnam are just some of the places this family has visited. Of all of them, Vietnam has a special place in their hearts. “It speaks a lot to us. We have got a big connection.”

But 2020 changed all their plans. “The pandemic changed everything. We couldn’t continue this life anymore. It was not part of our principles. It was time to respect rules and stay at home. That is why we decided to settle our family in a place that gives us nature, spirituality and fertile ground to develop our future plans.”

The Miljian decided to start a new chapter in their story, and Bali looked like the perfect place to do it. “The world needs to be responsible. We will travel again when conditions are safe. We hope that will be soon.” This major change in their lives was a challenge, but also an opportunity. “It is always a challenge to change something in your life, particularly to pause a dream you are pursuing. But we take it as an opportunity. This is a new chapter of our life. Our kids have started school here for the first time and we are developing other dreams we had in our drawer.”

THE ISLANDS OF THE GODS

Bali is one of the most famous islands in Indonesia. Its tropical climate, paradisical beaches and volcanic mountains create the perfect scenery for tourists and lovers of travel from all over the world. More recently, its low cost of living has seen it described as a paradise for digital nomads.

Besides the natural beauty we can all witness in images of the island, there are several other things that Julien and Miki find enchanting about this little paradise they chose to live in. “Balinese people are truly wonderful. They open up their ancestral traditions and culture to us. It’s another world. It’s no coincidence that Bali is called ‘the Island of the Gods’.”

Living in Bali since 2020, Julien and Miki told LEMON Magazine about the impact of COVID-19 on the island. “Right now, you find a very quiet island, where nature finds more space than before. Some places are suffering from the effects of not having tourism. The Balinese are working harder than ever to open their borders again.”

Though we often think of Bali as a destination for two, Julien and Miki guarantee that it’s perfect for families. “Bali is a super suitable destination for families. Balinese people love and respect families. You will enter a new world of surprises and your children will be amazed.”

About the island’s safety, they also only have good things to say. “It’s safer than certain parts of Europe. Bali and its people do their best to make you feel at home. If you need it, you will always find somebody to give you a hand. There is solidarity here.”

LEMON Magazine [LEMON]: How long does it take to really enjoy Bali?

The Miljian [T.M.]: Three weeks is best. The first one to feel lost, the second to start to love it, and the third to feel nostalgic and know you will miss it.

LEMON: What must not be missed?

T.M.: Local markets, Nyang Nyang Beach, a walk through the rice paddies in Ubud, Banyu Wana Amertha Waterfall in the north of Bali, Tirta Empul, and the sunset at Jimbaran Beach. Actually there are plenty of things to do in Bali, based on each person’s preferences.

LEMON: What’s the best beach to go to with kids?

T.M.: Geger Beach in Nusa Dua. There is white sand and it’s safe to swim for everybody.

LEMON: And what about the best places to visit with kids?

T.M.: Local markets have always been a memorable experience for us, hand in hand visiting stands and discovering new cultures. They awaken senses and provoke curiosity.LEMON: Tell us a bit about the food in Bali… What’s something people have to try?

T.M.: Indonesian cuisine is accessible and super tasty. If you are keen on Asian food, you will not be disappointed: Nasi Goreng, Nasi Campur, Satay, Sambal Matah Sauce, Bubur Mengguh. There’s lots to choose from.

LEMON – Do you think there are any tourist traps in Bali?

T.M.: Like everywhere, you have to adopt new rules quickly. Some basic words and direct answers will help people understand you’re not a novice. But that applies to anywhere you visit of course.

LEMON – What is the best time of the year to visit the island?

T.M.: You will read everywhere that the dry season is the best time of the year — April to October — and that is true. Specifically you should visit during one of the island’s incredible ceremonies — they are something not to be missed, for sure.

LEMON – What is essential when packing for Bali?

T.M.: Mosquito lotion. You will need it, particularly if you are staying close to the rice fields. Everything else you can find on the “Island of the Gods”.

Solo mum Evie Farrell and her daughter Emmie are two adventurous souls. From Australia to the world, they started travelling five years ago and have never stopped. In 2019, they even wrote a book about their travels: Backyard to Backpack: A solo mum, a six-year-old and a life-changing adventure. We wanted to get to know them better and discover the secrets behind their lifestyle.

LEMON Magazine [LEMON]: Tell us a bit more about you and Emmie. When did you start to travel?

Evie Farrell [E.F]: Emmie is 11 and our first big trip was when she had just turned six. Before that we travelled a lot together to resorts and places like Disneyland. I think I took her to Fiji when she was like 4 months old — her father and I had just separated and travel has always been a really important part of my life.

In February 2016 we set off on a big adventure. Since then we have been travelling full-time. We came home a couple of times for me to earn money, but we kept doing short trips while here.

[LEMON]: What was your life like before travelling full-time?

[E.F]: Emmie was in kindergarten and I was working full-time. I used to leave home really early and be back when it was time for Emmie to go to sleep. We had an au pair who lived with us and looked after Emmie and I felt like I never had quality time with my daughter.

Then a very close friend of mine passed away and it made me realise how true that cliché about time is, about never knowing how much time you have and making the most of every moment. That really was the catalyst for making the decision. Within six months we had left Australia. I thought it would be for a year and it ended up being most of the time since then.

[LEMON]: What kind of travellers are you?

[E.F]: We are very unplanned and unorganised — not so much disorganised. We like to explore and take it easy. We have goals of places that we want to visit and experience but we just go with the flow. I let Emmie lead. We are very collaborative and have a lot of fun. We go wherever we want to, whenever we want to.

I think one of the great things to learn, although you will learn it very quickly when you travel with kids, is that you have to be really aware of their needs. Sometimes that means sacrificing things you want to do to visit a playground, have a nap, or just sit and play in the sand.

At the end of the day, we are very easy travellers and we stay in all kinds of accommodation. I also don’t like to pigeonhole us in terms of being tourists or travellers — as long as we are out in the world exploring, that’s amazing. There shouldn’t be any judgement in travel.

BEST PLACES YOU HAVE EATEN

For Emmie, I would say China because of the Xaolongbao (soup dumplings). She actually first tried them in Taipei (Taiwan), but you can get them all over China.

For me, Vietnam for the fresh food and salads… Also Bangkok (Thailand) for the street food. There is just incredibly fresh and delicious street food on every corner of the city. But we also love Japanese food.”

BEST ADVICE FOR SOLO MUMS TRAVELLING WITH THEIR KIDS

If you really want to travel full-time with your child, you can absolutely do it! Don’t put pressure on yourself and just slowly build up to it. If you are afraid to travel, take it slow. Start with “staycations” in your city and places that you are familiar with. Go to resorts where you feel comfortable and explore while having them as your base.

We should not put pressure on ourselves to do more than we feel comfortable with. As a solo parent, spending that valuable time with your kids is so important and it’s really what everyone wants, right?”

[LEMON]: How many countries have you visited?

[E.F]: To be completely honest, I don’t know. I feel like exploring is not a competition so we don’t keep count. It’s about the experiences and the memories.

[LEMON]: Which destination did you and Emmie like the most? And where did you like the least?

[E.F]: We just loved everywhere in Asia. Emmie loves China for the food and the people. She also adores Japan because of the structure she sees in their daily life. For me, it’s Vietnam. We lived there for some time and people are beautiful, entrepreneurial and kind. And the food is fresh and delicious.

We both also loved being in France and spending time in Paris, but Asia is in us. We just love it and we miss it a lot. Also we were robbed in Europe and that really turned Emmie off. It was not the best experience.

[LEMON]: Where did you feel the most secure?

[E.F]: We just constantly feel so completely safe and looked after in Asia. Especially being a woman with a young child. I have never felt anything but safe everywhere in Asia. I really feel at home there.

[LEMON]: What do you think is the best destination for travelling alone with a kid?

[E.F]: I think the best destination for travelling with a child is somewhere where you feel really comfortable and confident.

I mean, there are certain things that I would look at with young children: the medical facilities in the country and the political and economic environment. At the same time, I feel like some of the poorest countries we visited have been the most giving. They have such a sense of community and family.

I still think you need to be aware of your surroundings and just know what is going on in the destinations you will travel to.

[LEMON]: Do you think Emmie benefits from this lifestyle?

[E.F]: The number one benefit of travelling full-time with your kids is that you spend every moment together. That’s what children want at this age. They don’t want to just see you for ten minutes as you are rushing to and from work. I think they prefer to have valuable, beautiful time with their parents rather than being given gifts to make up for time that was not spent with them.

In addition to that, they learn about the world, about different cultures and religions. They get to see how other people live and experience poverty and hardship. This helps them appreciate their own lives and know how fortunate they are to even be able to have the luxury of travel.

In terms of social skills, Emmie is so conversational and confident. She is able to deal with change and to walk into different situations. She’s been to seven different schools, in Australia and overseas, as well as doing distance education. I personally feel you learn more experiencing the world at this age than you do sitting at a desk at school.

[LEMON]: What has travelling full-time taught you?

[E.F]: Travel has taught me to believe in myself. I think it enabled me to kind of become myself: I finally got to be me. I felt restricted and that I always had to be a certain way. But when you are travelling you can relax away from expectations and be free. I feel like as a society, we put certain expectations upon people as they grow. We need to go to school, high school and university. Then we find a partner, get married and have kids. There are expectations about how we are supposed to be and live. By doing something different I was able to break out of that and it just made me so much happier. I feel more confident as a person and I feel that I have made good use of these years being with Emmie, rather than spending them away from her at work. I could have earned a whole lot of money but it is more valuable to me this way.

TOP 3 EXPERIENCES WHILE TRAVELLING

I will never forget camping overnight on the Great Wall of China. It was spectacular and kind of spiritual because there is an eerie atmosphere… but not scary. It’s just amazing and I would definitely go there again.”

“I loved sitting with Emmie in the doorway of the Blue Train in Sri Lanka.”

Most recently we had so much fun in Bagan (Myanmar), riding around to the temples on a little motorbike with Emmie on the back.”

[LEMON]: How would you describe your relationship with Emmie?

[E.F]: We have absolutely the strongest, most honest, open, beautiful relationship. I honestly could not ask for more. We are so close and I am so grateful for that. I know that we would not have that if we had not been travelling, because of the circumstances of us being apart so much with me working. Travelling is the best decision I could have ever made.

[LEMON]: How has your life been since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic?

[E.F]: We were at home for about eight months in 2019.

I was home, writing my book and doing all the media and launch events for that and as soon as we could, we left Aus

tralia. We left on the first of December and travelled to the Philippines. We were there for about six weeks over Christmas. From there we went to Myanmar, where we explored the temples and the lakes and rode around on motorbikes. We spent some time in Malaysia and then went to Japan. We were there when the Australian government said that everyone needed to come back to Australia.

We are from Sydney and after the lockdown was finished, we travelled around our state — New South Wales. Then we moved to a little island off the coast of Queensland. Tourists come here but the local population is about 1800 people. There are beautiful beaches and a huge koala colony. It is just a beautiful place to live. Emmie goes to school here and we’ve just been biding our time until we can travel again.

[LEMON]: What are your biggest concerns when it to comes to travelling alone with Emmie?

[E.F]: Honestly, I have no concerns when travelling with Emmie. I feel safe, I feel happy, I feel comfortable and so does she. We both have a great time together. I know that she is living an amazing life and not missing anything. We obviously stay in touch with her dad and her grandparents through social media and phone calls, and she sees them whenever we are home. In terms of travel, for her and for me, I don’t worry about anything. It’s our best life!

3 BEST TIPS FOR TRAVELLING WITH CHILDREN

1 Pack light! You can always buy what you need if you forget something — just don’t pack too much. We travel with a carry-on backpack and find that we really need very little. You’ll find that the less you have, the less you need.”

2 Don’t try and do too much with kids! They still need down-time to stop at parks and do kids’ stuff. Just take it slow and enjoy being with them, as well as seeing amazing things and having amazing experiences.”

3 Always take an hotel card. Put it in your child’s pocket or in their backpack so they know that it’s there. Keep one for yourself too. Especially in countries where you do not speak the language. If you and your child get separated, they will have a card that shows where they are staying. If you get lost and need to get back to your hostel, hotel or wherever you’re staying, you have the address card that you can just show the taxi or tuk-tuk driver and they will be able to get you back.”
