The Informal Opera Festival Arrives to Algarve

On September 13 and 14, Loulé and Alte host the 3rd edition of FIO: a festival that reinvents opera in unexpected formats, blending cultural heritage with the Algarve’s landscapes.

Opera Finds New Stages

After successful editions in Braga and Barcelos, the Festival Informal de Ópera (FIO) makes its Algarve debut, bringing contemporary opera to unique urban and natural settings in Loulé and Alte.

Over two days, September 13 and 14, audiences will discover four brand-new operas created exclusively for this edition, along with immersive experiences that bring communities closer to opera in fresh, unexpected ways.

“The FIO arrives in the Algarve with high expectations, promising to carry the same energy that won over audiences in the North, with even more activities”

says Sara Ross, from the Artistic Direction.

Program Highlights

At FIO, opera is not only seen but lived. The festival presents original, interactive formats that break boundaries:

  • Operatic Flashmob at Loulé Municipal Market (Sept 13, 10:30 am)

  • Participatory Opera with local youth, at Solar da Música Nova Auditorium (Sept 13, 5:00 pm)

  • Sound Walks guiding audiences through the streets of Loulé and the village of Alte

  • World Premieres including Mane-Quim/Pig-Malião, M.O.G.A., Coisas do Verão, and Abelardo e Heloísa

From an urban amphitheater to Alte’s iconic Fonte Pequena, every performance invites audiences to experience opera beyond traditional stages, in dialogue with architecture, history, and local community.

A Festival with Identity

Launched in Braga in 2021, FIO was created to bring opera closer to wider audiences through original small-format productions by Portuguese artistic teams.

It values both cultural heritage and contemporary creation, presenting works written, composed, staged, and performed exclusively for the festival.

The 2025 edition is supported by the Portuguese Directorate-General for the Arts, the Municipality of Loulé, the Professional School of Alte, the Parish Council of Alte, MPMP – Património Musical Vivo, Emara Music School, and Antena 2.

Between the vibrant rhythm of Loulé and the tranquil charm of Alte, the Informal Opera Festival turns the Algarve into an open-air stage for creativity. Two days to experience opera in unexpected, intense, and intimate ways.
