Echoing Gender Neutrality Around The Home, For Ultra Cohesiveness

Five ways to echo gender neutral nursery

Curating a nursery haven is one of the most cherished moments ahead of baby’s arrival, yet with copious fads and marketed products out there, one can get trapped in the blue versus pink dialogue.

Pivoting to ungendered design – a progressively favoured approach, whether in the form of bespoke artwork, vibrant hues or an oaty sandy mushroom palette – here are five ways to echo gender neutral nursery features around your entire abode, for a desired cohesiveness that sprouts from the baby’s oasis.

Statement wallpaper meets bespoke print

Nursery statement walls shouldn’t be too risqué – this precious serene sleep space would be disrupted by a colossal dinosaur in lime and ruby, or an overstimulating jungle artwork.

Instead, opt for a subtle print or wallpaper that complements a nursery’s purity whilst lending itself well to a copy and paste job around the home.

Take this Harlequin Kinabalu John Lewis wallpaper, for instance, where the subtle elephant meets foliage toile fuses playfulness with a dose of gender-neutral chic; or this Graham & Brown Grizedale green bespoke mural, boasting an eloquent palette of sage and emerald, muted by a soft setting – one of the copious natural offerings from Graham & Brown depicting lush woodlands.

Once the nursery’s statement corner has been established, pepper the same design around the house, through wall-hung framed wallpaper leading down the staircase, an heirloom chest of drawers lined with the greenery or elephant motif, and a lampshade of complimentary fabric.

A toy box needn’t be a plastic eye sore

Offensive bright orange plastic of course has its place – as when it comes to my son’s equipage, the cheaper and more fabulously grotesque the aesthetic the better – however it doesn’t have to stretch to storage.

Gravitate towards soft milky tones that radiate comfort and calm, whilst not costing an arm and a leg (with white and little ones, easily replaceable items are best..).

Dreams has a simple Chloe upholstered offering in cosy cream bouclé or taupe velvet that oozes comfort.

This elegant take on the toy box allows you to replicate the look within other areas – such as a lamp table in the salon, a sock bank in the boudoir, and even a laundry hamper – weaving that thread throughout the home.

Showcase mini Picasso

Every parent has the next Van Gough, right?

Well if your little one’s nursery creations are spider drawings or a sponge take on Kandinsky, instead of an unremarkable plastic frame housing the masterpieces, opt for an elegant wood or large golden frame aesthetic – such as this delicious Cavendish ornate design by The Frame Company – that you also have elsewhere in the house.

Not only will this look be more refined, your darling will also love seeing their artwork exhibited on a grander scale.

Mirror soft furnishings

The home should be a place of refuge, somewhere to recharge and somewhere to escape.

Soft textures in copper, coral or tan routed through throws or cushioning, embrace a welcome warmth to one’s home, and should have a strong presence within the nursery.

Whether draped over an ottoman or tumbling off a nursing chair, championing cosy layers keeps a space snug and inviting.

Gallery wall and another gallery wall

Photographs of loved ones are a wonderful feature in any nursery, reminding your little ones that these smiling faces are always surrounding them.

Creating a gallery wall within the nursery as well as another space, such as a guest bathroom or secondary hallway, is an harmonic mechanism to tie together the tale of the home.

It’s best to adhere to a maximum of three styles of frames to avoid any notion of chaos.

This very affordable Louis piece in cream from Frames Plus dovetails the tasteful gender neutral voice, whilst an oval frame (or mirror, even, such as this Selena Wall Mirror by Olivia’s) injects geometric playfulness.
