Today, over 130 students from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds call Kingfisher home.
Despite challenges like cyclones and the pandemic, the school has grown into a resilient, vibrant community, supported by passionate teachers from both local Inhambane and international backgrounds.
As one Quality Assurance agent noted:
“Tucked far away in an isolated corner of Southern Africa lies a gem of a school whose staff are the unsung heroes of authentic child-centered education.”
Through the Kingfisher Education Trust, they ensure this vision thrives, transforming lives one child at a time.
Angela – A patient, food-loving little girl who treasures every toy. Her father is a driver, and her mother sells fruit seasonally.
Jenifer (“Jenny from the Block”) – Creative and caring, she loves to sing. Her mum works in a lodge kitchen, supported by her grandmother.
João – Budding builder, storyteller, and soccer fan. Lives with his hardworking mum and grandmother.
Joel – A detail-oriented future engineer, lovingly raised by his grandfather while his young parents finish school.
Chelcia – Bright, determined, and the “fresh face” of The Trust. Daughter of Kingfisher’s long-serving gardener, with two brothers also in school.
Elisabete – The very first sponsored student, now a confident young woman since joining in 2014.
Walter – Recently joined from public school. Sponsorship would help him complete his final year with confidence.
An annual contribution of $200 covers administrative costs and resources. After that, the student’s education is supported at these rates:
Preschool: $110/month or $1,320/year (MZN 7,000 / 84,000)
Primary School: $160/month or $1,920/year (MZN 10,000 / 120,000)
High School: $260/month or $3,120/year (MZN 16,200 / 194,400)
The Learn to Swim Program, run by experienced SSI Instructor Gwen Pugh, provides underprivileged children (ages 6–10) with lifesaving swimming lessons in Machavenga.
