To make things a little easier, Marks & Spencer surveyed 500 parents across the UK to find out which newborn clothing items were truly essential versus those that stayed neatly folded and untouched.
Whether you’re preparing for your own new arrival or shopping for someone else’s, consider this your parenting-approved checklist!
Turns out, socks are the biggest surprise of the baby wardrobe.
While 73% of parents stocked up on them pre-birth, only 36% said they turned out to be essential.
Long-sleeved baby grows and sleepsuits (voted essential by 41%)
Sleeveless bodysuits (28%)
Muslins and swaddles (highly rated for practicality)
Meanwhile, smarter outfits, hats, and seasonal pieces didn’t make the cut, because during those first few sleep-deprived weeks, comfort is king.
M&S’s survey revealed that babies stay in newborn sizes for an average of just 33 days.
Over half (51%) of parents said their baby outgrew them in under a month, and 17% said their baby moved up a size in just two weeks.
So while those teeny tiny outfits are adorable, you’re better off mixing in a few 0-3M and 3-6M pieces from the get-go.

10 short-sleeved baby grows
Why? Because spit-up happens. And blowouts. And milk dribbles. And laundry delays.
Jennifer Burbage, Head of Kidswear Buying at M&S, shares:
“The NHS recommends at least six all-in-one sleepsuits and four to six vests or bodysuits, but in reality, most parents appreciated having spares. Prioritise super soft, breathable cotton and skip anything fussy, full-zip suits are a lifesaver!”
M&S recommends including pieces in sizes 0-3M and 3-6M too.
Look out for clever features like Grow With Me cuffs, which are designed to adapt as baby grows, meaning fewer outfit changes (and a little less stress).
